Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), a top-ranked public university with undergraduate degree programs focusing on science, engineering, technology, math, and business that blend academics and experiential learning, proudly hosted the recent Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOCP) 2025 Spring Conference, featuring key discussions on topics including maritime alternative fuels and overcoming workforce and regulatory challenges in maritime education.
The three-day conference, “Fueling the Future: Clean Energy and Education at the Forefront,” brought together industry leaders and educators for robust conversation on the pivotal role of innovative fuel solutions and educational programs in driving a sustainable energy future.
Keynote speaker for the Spring Conference was Lauren Gleason, Port Director for Massachusetts Port Authority, who shared insights on clean energy innovations. The conference featured panel discussions on balancing sustainability and feasibility in maritime alternative fuels, addressed challenges in maritime education, and explored offshore wind opportunities. Additionally, panelists addressed critical issues such as sexual assault and sexual harassment prevention, response strategies within the maritime industry, and achieving respectful onboard culture.
Michael Burns, Director of the Center for Maritime Training at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, served as a panel discussion moderator. Among the panelists were Sara Kazamais, Assistant Director of Career Services at the Academy, and Michael Mulken, the Academy’s Director of Marine Credentialing. Dr. James McDonald, Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education at the Academy, delivered the welcoming address on the second day of the April 15-17 conference.
