A Celebration of First Light: Wampanoag Art and Stories Illuminate Cotuit Center for the Arts

Cotuit Center for the Arts is thrilled to present All Our Relations: Art of the Wampanoag Nation, a month-long, campus-wide celebration of the enduring artistry, history, and living culture of the People of the First Light. Anchored by a major exhibition of Wampanoag visual art, this dynamic series also includes live performances in the Main Theater and Sigel Black Box Theater, offering audiences a powerful and multifaceted experience of Wampanoag creativity.

 

The Gallery Exhibition will encompass multiple artistic disciplines of a wide variety of Wampanoag artists from generation Z to baby boomers. This show is dedicated to all our relations because we are not here alone, and we did not endure without the courage and determination of our ancestors.” Said Paula Peters, a Mashpee Wampanoag who has co-curated the show with CCftA board member Michelle St. John.  With this vibrant showcase of art in diverse forms that bridge our traditional culture with contemporary life, we honor them.”

 

All Our Relations will feature the work of nearly 20 artists who are citizens of the Mashpee and Aquinnah federally acknowledged tribes, as well as the works of artists from the Herring Pond, Chappaquiddick bands of Wampanoag all influenced by their tribal heritage and cultural experience. The show will include unique works that bridge traditional culture with contemporary life in paintings in acrylic and watercolor, digital art, pottery, wood carvings, beadwork, wampum, and deerskin regalia.

 

All Our Relations Gallery Exhibit will open May 30 and run through June 29.The Opening Reception is scheduled for May 31 from 5 to 7PM. More information on this exhibit can be found online at https://cotuit.org/explore/all-our-relations.

 

On the Main Stage, All Our Relations will feature First Light Flashback on May 30 and 31. Mashpee Wampanoag, Annawon Weeden, interprets the history of the Wampanoag from pre-colonial times to present day in the compelling one-man performance. Tlingit singer-songwriter, Kim Moberg, will present Seven Fires Prophecy Suite for Humanity on June 5 at 7PM on the Main Stage. Inspired by the Anishinaabe Seven Fires Prophecy, this powerful original work weaves Indigenous themes with contemporary folk music, delivering a deeply personal and resonant musical experience. Nutahkeemun Artist Collective will curate 4 dates in the Sigel Black Box Theater featuring music and theater June 19 through the 22.

 

On June 19, there will also be An Evening of Wampanoag Music in Solidarity with Juneteenth.

 

June 20 through the 22, A Piece of Silver, written and performed by Siobhan Brown (Mashpee Wampanoag) will be performed in the Sigel Black Box Theater. Based on recorded conversations with her grandmothers – two powerful, hard working women with something important to say – this show serves as a powerful connection across generations, weaving cultural identities. This one-act-play uplifts stories of generational healing, renewal and liberation, and is surely one not to miss.
