Massachusetts Maritime Academy Celebrates Second Annual Writers’ Week

Massachusetts Maritime Academy, a top-ranked public university with undergraduate degree programs focusing on science, engineering, technology, math, and business that blend academics and experiential learning, recently hosted its Second Annual Writing Celebration Week with enthusiastic participation.

In recognition of Writing Celebration Week (held from November 18 through 22), student work from a variety of courses across the curricula was on exhibit on the second floor of the American Bureau of Shipping Information Commons.  Displayed work demonstrated students’ growth and development of their writing skills and their ability to communicate the depth of their knowledge clearly and concisely. Pieces ranged from technical writing and opinions to research on AI and the future of privacy and security.

The focal point of the week’s celebrations was the panel discussion of faculty authors moderated by Humanities Chair Dr. Caleb Pendygraft. Panelists included faculty authors Chris Kelly of the Science and Math Department, Drs. Morgan Banville and Sarah Lennox of the Humanities Departments, Dr. Paul Szwed from the International Maritime Business Department, and Dr. Michael Pregot, Guest Lecturer. This panel brought faculty and approximately forty students and staff together to engage in the process, purpose, and professional application of writing as an essential skill in all aspects of their lives and careers. Library Director Carolyn Michaud remarked, "We were delighted to host such an engaging event between our faculty and students.  It was a great opportunity to highlight the many reasons why strong writing skills are essential for all MMA graduates, across all majors."

The event concluded with an opportunity to ask questions of panelists, to engage with the student work on display, and enjoy refreshments.

This 2nd Annual Writing Celebration Week was sponsored by the Humanities and Library Services Departments, under Dr. Pendygraft and Ms. Michaud.
