BBBS Features Buzzards Bay Boy who is Waiting for a Big Brother 10-Year-Old Dorian Seeks Adult Mentor

This May, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands (BBBSCCI) is hoping to set youth up for success before the summer months. As such, the agency is featuring one child who has been waiting for a Big longer than expected.

As part of BBBSCCI’s Waiting Little of the Month campaign, long waiting Little Dorian, age 10, from Buzzards Bay is being featured.  Dorian has been on the agency’s waitlist for over 680 days and lives with his mom. Dorian’s mom enrolled him in the program in hopes of finding a Big Brother who would help Dorian reach his full potential by being a consistent, positive adult that could help him explore new interests and hopefully shoot some hoops with him. In Dorian’s own words: “I’d like a Big Brother who I could hang out with and might even be good at skateboarding!”

“Putting a face to the need for volunteerism has been so impactful for many of our long waiting kids, especially boys,” noted JR Mell, Regional Director with BBBSCCI. “For potential volunteers reading these stories, many realize that youth mentoring is simply including a young person in everyday activities you already enjoy doing. Our best mentors are ones who tend to be on the fence about being a Big but take the leap and sign up.”

In addition to Dorian, there are 7 other boys in the Bourne/Wareham area, currently waiting for a mentor. Despite a recent successful volunteer recruitment campaign, a majority of those who signed up were not local to Buzzards Bay/Wareham/Onset so the youth in these areas are still waiting for mentors.
