The Thornton W. Burgess Green Briar Nature Center & Jam Kitchen (Sandwich, MA) is part of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History (Brewster, MA). It is a non-profit educational 501(c)(3) organization founded to carry on the pioneering conservation work of renown children's author and naturalist, Thornton Burgess (1874-1964). Burgess, a Sandwich native, achieved national and international recognition for his children's stories and characters featuring Peter Rabbit (AKA Peter Cottontail), Reddy Fox, Grandfather Frog, Jimmy Skunk and a host of other celebrated characters. His stories taught generations of readers lessons abouth the importance of conservation and a love for wildlife. Visitors to Green Briar enjoy the Green Meadow Forest storybook exhibit, small menagerie of local critters, the stiull operating 1903 Ida Putnam jam kitchen, special nature programs, Burgess exhibit room, the award-wining Dr. Shirley Cross wildflower garden and the Mercantile gift shop. The jam kitchen makes special blends sold inthe Mercantile and offers jame making classes.
